Four Score Years and Ten

Commissioned by Winchester City Council
A Flintlock Theatre and Hat Fair Co-Production

A play inspired by the lives of Winchester’s 90-year-olds, specially commissioned to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday year.

When my bones are stiff and aching,
And my feet won’t climb the stair,
I will only ask one favor:
Don’t bring me no rocking chair.
‘On Aging’, Maya Angelou

In July and August 2016, Flintlock Theatre and Hat Fair met with around 40 older people who generously came forward to share their life stories with us at a series of coffee mornings and group sessions.

After more detailed interviews with six of our participants, Flintlock Theatre crafted their words into the script of a new play that explored what it’s like to be an older person in contemporary Britain.

Four Score Years And Ten was performed at village halls in Kings Worthy, Highfleet and Otterbourne in September 2016 with audiences invited to take tea and cake whilst listening to nine decades of stories.

“Old age is the most unexpected of all things that can happen to a man.”
Leon Trotsky

We are very grateful to all of our interviewees for sharing their experiences of life’s ups and downs with us so honestly, but particularly to the six stars of our show: Charlie, June, Lewis, Phyllis, Tom and Eve.

The following video is a selection of clips taken from archive footage of one performance in Otterbourne.

Live Advent Calendar, Woolly Hat Fair

1 – 24 December 2015

Woolly Hat Fair Live Advent Calendar

December 2015 saw the launch of the first ever Woolly Hat Fair, a Christmas celebration which took place out and about around Winchester in the spirit of the famous summer festival.

For our inaugural Woolly Hat Fair year we made a Live Advent Calendar.

On every day in December, a door opened somewhere in the city, behind which a small moment of magic took place. There were performances, exhibitions, installations, weird and wonderful happenings, story-telling, puppetry, and all sorts of things to join in with – a festive lucky dip!

24 days, 24 doors, 24 events.
