Children's Parade

Call out for schools – Take part in the Official Opening of Hat Fair 2018!

We are looking for schools to take part in this year’s Hat Fair Official Opening – an energetic and spectacular parade through Winchester city centre by local school children.

The theme is VOTE – 100 YEARS! to celebrate the centenary of the Representation of the People Act which enabled some women in the UK to get the Vote for the first time.

Participating schools will enjoy:

• An introductory lesson plan detailing the VOTE – 100 YEARS! parade theme and what will happen in the making workshop/s.

• A one (or two-day making workshop) in May or June with Kate Sully, a highly experienced professional textile artist-facilitator and Hat Fair practitioner.
The children will make sashes during the workshop, which will then be used to create the school’s own unique banner. These will reflect the themes of VOTE – 100 YEARS! exploring gender equality, the right of the child and other associated themes suitable for the ages of the participants and with local relevance.

• The Parade Day – Friday 29 June, 12 noon
Up to 350 school children will parade their creations, with live performance accompaniment from the brilliant Bicycle Ballet. The Parade will start at the Cathedral grounds and finish on the Broadway in front of Winchester’s famous Guildhall – the seat of local government – where there will be a finale moment from Bicycle Ballet linked to the VOTE – 100 YEARS! theme. Hat Fair 2018 is then officially launched!

After the parade has finished the schools are invited to picnic in Abbey Gardens and be entertained by fantastic family-friendly Hat street performers.
