Top Hat Competition

Playmakers Top Hat Competition returns to Hat Fair with an exciting programme of work presented by current undergraduates and recent graduates from University of Winchester.

Experience emerging artists as they test out their work to live audiences.

Come and support University of Winchester students as they perform an exciting line-up of newly devised, entertaining and innovative work as part of our Top Hat Competition.

A panel of judges including: Majid Dhana (Spoken Word Artist) Victoria Hancock (Performance Artist) and Richard Hurford (Dramaturg and Writer) will help select our winner for Top Hat 2024. Winners will be announced Saturday 6 July 5pm at St John's Lawn.

The Programme

Performances will take place on Sat 06 Jul 12.30pm – 1.30pm at St John's Lawn.

In this Laurel and Hardy style performance for kids, you will join the great Captain Bickle and First Mate Torrance on an adventure of lifetime!

You will meet all sorts of interesting characters, such as the Fairy Queen and the disgusting Goblin Fungus!

Welcome to the playground of your memories, the little rays of light you left behind. Together, we'll get a break from the responsibility of life. Come and play as we bring you back to the past, and explore the awkward transition of growing up and letting go.

An autobiographical performance delving into the life of someone with ADHD and how childhood impacts who we become. This personal performance highlights societies pressures on those 'outside the norm'.

Shrewish Women

A Live Art installation where five shrewish women embrace divine femininity through song, movement, and text from Shakespeare's 'timeless classic' The Taming of the Shrew. They possess the form of Victorian Shrews with masks and costume, celebrating women who united in free spirit, claiming their shrewdness for themselves.

Created to provide an opportunity for artists from University of Winchester to showcase their work and receive mentoring from Playmakers experienced staff, Top Hat Competition is part of our commitment to discovering the best new talent in our community.
